Islam is also based on the Five Pillars, and these Five Pillars are laid out in the Qur’an, and they are five things that every Muslim must do throughout their life.

One is faith in Allah. So, they must have faith in their god. Another is a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca. This is a holy city for Muslims, and even Muslims that are living in America today are expected to make a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
A yearly fast during the month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is the 9th month in an Islamic calendar, and adults that are healthy are expected to fast from dawn until sunset. So, any time that the sun is out, they’re not supposed to eat or drink. Now, if someone is sick or elderly or pregnant, then they are exempt from fasting, though they are supposed to make up the days later. If it is a situation, like if they’re traveling, that’s another exemption, but they should make up the days after they’re done traveling. And they are allowed to eat and drink before sunrise and after sunset. So, it’s not that they aren’t eating or drinking for an entire month, it’s just that during daytime hours, from dawn to sunset, they are fasting. And they’re supposed to use the time of fasting to reflect, to pray more, to empathize with people who don’t have as much and possibly do some generous works.
Another of the Five Pillars is the giving of alms. So, donations to others who are needier than themselves. And the last pillar is prayer five times a day. So, some people may pray more than that, but they’re supposed to pray at least five times a day, in the Islamic religion. So, those are the basics of Islam. It was founded by Muhammad in 610, who was Prophet, and based on the Qur’an, a book of scripture that is supposed to be the direct words from God, their God, Allah. And their religion is based on Five Pillars founded the Qur’an, that include having faith in Allah, a pilgrimage to Mecca, a fast during Ramadan, the giving of alms, and praying five times a day.
Now, Muhammad said that Islam should be spread all around the world, and this is something that was also in the Christian religion. That Christianity should be spread all over the world. So, you can imagine the two religions both focused on one true god might not get along too well, and there may be some tension because each religion, each group of followers that are practicing that religion, are going to feel that their god is the one true god, and aren’t going to look fondly upon anyone saying something different.
So, as the Christian Church was becoming dominant in Europe, Islam spread throughout North Afric, the Middle East, and to parts of Asia, and even to parts of Spain. So, Christianity had spread throughout Europe because it developed in an area closer to Europe, and Islam spread to North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia and Spain, because that was where Islam was closer. But those two areas are still very close to each other, so there was some tension. And the simultaneous development of the two religions led to large scale conflict, most notably during the Crusades.
So, Islam started out in 610. It spent a while developing and spreading around the world, and it took three or four centuries, but then they developed what will become known as the Islamic Empire.
