Moon and Sun on Ocean Tides

The moon and the sun both play a role in affecting ocean tides, but the main force behind ocean tides is the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth’s ocean.

The sun exerts a smaller influence, so the sun and the moon both influence the oceans tides but the main force is the moon. That’s what we’re going to focus on, because that’s the main thing that’s impacting these oceans and it does it through a gravitational pull.

Right here we have the earth and here we have the moon. At a point like this, this side of the earth is going to experience high tide and this side of the earth is going to experience high tide. The reason this side experiences high tide is because it’s close to the moon and so the gravitational force of the moon is pulling the water towards it. Then it’s also kind of pulling the earth towards it, but that leaves the water behind, so the water molecules on the far side are left behind and begin to pile up, so that’s why you have high tide over here.

 

However this high tide is going to be larger than that high tide, it’s going to be bigger than this high tide, because it’s closest to the moon. Now we have these two other sides in between the high tides and so these are going to experience low tide. As you can see, each side of the earth can experience high tide, twice a day and low tide twice a day.

Now the ocean tides differ, depending on where you are geographically, like for example, the Golf of Mexico only has high tide once a day and low tide once a day. But in general, you’re going to have high tide twice a day and low tide twice a day. We could also call this a bold to the high tide, because it results from the water on the side, facing the moon being pulled towards the moon, because of that gravitational pull. But both sides are going to experience high tide, this high tide is just going to be stronger. That’s how the moon and sun affect ocean tides.
