How to start with your GED®

You can sign up for the GED® program if you don’t have a high school diploma or similar, and if you are not registered for any other school program. If you want to go the GED route, here is in short how to get started with your preparation: Find a GE®D preparation location near you and discover your level of achievement. Learn everything about requirements and regulations, and prepare well. You may also want to check information about our free online GED prep program, click here to read how it works.

GED® registration

Go to GED.com and discover everything regarding the 2014-Series of the GED® program. Sign up with the portal MyGED and learn how to register and schedule your test appointments. Also, your local bookstore will have booklets and other material for GED® preparation, and there are also some pretty good internet sites that offer free GED prep courses. But probably the best thing to do is to combine online instruction with GED® prep classes at one of the many facilities that will assist you (often at no cost at all) to become sufficiently prepared. Check the listing above for preparation classes close to you.

Free GED Online Classes

To be able to take the GED® exam in Alabama you must not be signed up for a public or private K-12 school, a church school, or an education program recognized by Alabama’s  Department of Education. You must not possess a secondary diploma from a public or private school, and you must be at least 18 years old. If you are younger you have to meet specific restrictions.

What’s new on the GED®

The Alabama GED exam is only offered on a computer and you have to come to an official GED Test Center to sit for the exam in person, you cannot do it online. To register for the GED exam go to GED.com and create your account at MyGED (or call 1-877-392-6433). Applicants don’t need to pay for the whole battery of four tests at once. You only need to pay for the subject(s) that you have registered for. The fee is $30 per subject. Among the many advantages of the new GED examination is that there is so much flexibility.

Alabama GED® Price

The Alabama GED test will set you back $120 for the entire battery of four sub-tests ($30 per section). The GED test can only be taken at state-approved testing sites, online testing is NOT possible. If you come across websites with a different story, you can be sure the sites are false and only after your dollars in a fraudulent way. The GED subtests may be taken separately, no longer do you have to sit for the entire battery in one take. Your scores are valid for the period of two years, so plenty of time to get all set for one subject, pass that section, and go on to the next chapter!

GED® Passing Score

The passing score for each GED® test was reduced to 145 points in early 2016 (down from 150) as it appeared it was set too high. You can read all about it in this article. You register online and take (and pay for) only the subject(s) you are prepared to take. You can take the one (or more, if there is time) sub-tests at the date that fits your agenda and schedule. Test results are valid for a 2-year period. You can check your test results right after you took the exam.

These are really great advantages of the “digitalization” of the GED® exam. If you didn’t pass a subject area of the new GED® exam, you can retake that part, but you are required to wait at least 30 days before you are allowed to retest for that subject. For the first two retests, you need to pay $10 provided that you retake the subjects within one year.
